Hinkel and Naka look promising as Celts cruise (sort of)
It has been a theme of this season that we have endured some pretty boring games of football both in Paradise and on our travels. Yesterdays crowd albeit much larger than would be expected for such a tie (due to free entry for SBHs), was again a ghost of glory days gone by and those magical Champions' League ties. It is only to be expected that once a Homo Sapien's expectation levels have risen then they become blase toward the homely fair on offer at the SPL and domestic Cup table.
I expect another reason for the larger than normal cup crowd was that we were offered the chance to see our new , German capped, right back - Andrea Hinkel in action. I must say I, and my travelling companions were suitably impressed with Hinkel. He appeared strong in the tackle, strong in physique, pretty quick and was attack minded enough to overlap Naka on a number of occasions and whip in pretty decent crosses, of a standard Gary Caldwell could only dream about.
Poor Gary, although slotted back into his traditional number 5 position he still, on occasion, took his mind of the game a la Oliver Tebily and required digging out by his team-mates.
Mick on the other hand , throwing himself around in front of pile-drivers did not see out the last few minutes of the game, one assumes with concussion - there are only certain amounts of knocks a player can take to the napper before things go wrong ( I am a perfect example of that).
Naka, well an absolute sensation when in the mood and a very talented, and money spinning player. At times a very frustrating player , however yesterday he performed admirably and even extracted a couple of gasps from the black overcoat brigade.
We scored just before half time and it was inevitable that it was made (these days) by young Glaswegian Aiden McGeady; a superb jink and driven cut back which was converted with aplomb by Big lazy Jan (and that was that from him again).
We should have notched a couple more early in the second half but panicky finishing (Skippy and Jan) prevented this. However Skippy redeemed himself with a superb finish from just inside the 18 yard box to make it 2 - 0.
Naka then decided to wiggle and woggle and curled a sublime shot into the top corner to make it three, he was then duly substituted.
Donati blew hot and cold once more, sublime long passing, stupid short passing and a superb volley flashing just wide which would have been a goal of the season contender. Skoosh Broon also had good efforts as did Lee Naylor , and I'm surprised the Tory goalie managed to stay on The line, one day that gut is going to put a hole in a net.
Apart from what seamed like officials who where looking after the wee boys and were obviously more used to the rough and tumble of D1, and what looked like turning down a blatant penalty the day panned out fine.
Well the weather was Baltic and I suggest all of you near the West end and Thistle should donate a few ten bobs for their meters.
